Specialist Teachers

Specialist Music teachers teach Music at Marsden from the earliest years in the Primary School to our senior Scholarship students in Year 13.

Marsden offers the full NCEA curriculum, supported by a wonderful extra curricular programme which includes choirs, orchestras, concert bands, jazz, swing bands and handbell ringing. Highly valued at Marsden is the Composer in Residence programme where a composer works at the school for five weeks, taking workshops with the senior students and composing a piece of music for the school.

Music Lessons

Girls may take individual or group lessons in a wide variety of instruments. See Cultural Booklet on Overview Page for full details of the music groups offered at Marsden, and how to register for them.

Lessons are organised within the school timetable where possible.

Swainson Memorial Music Competition

The annual Swainson Memorial Music Competition is the flagship competition for our top musicians. Two major awards are made at this prestigious event, the Betty Swainson Memorial Music Award for the top performance on the night and the Nell Clere Music Scholarship awarded by the Old Girls' Association to the student showing the most musical potential.

Composer in Residence

The Marsden Composer in Residence programme sees a composer working alongside students over a five week period, taking workshops with the senior students and supporting choral and instrumental events. During the residency the Composer in Residence composes a piece of music for the school.
