Year 11-13 Newsletter Notices

Notices Week 5

Updating Your Details
When you first enrolled your son or daughter at Marsden you gave us your contact details.  We have sent you an email with a link to check that these details are correct.  Please take a moment and update any details that are incorrect by Wednesday 28 February.
Please note:  On the student general information tab the mobile phone number listed is the students own number.  It is very rare for us to call this but it can be useful if your daughter carries her own phone.
Your name, address, email and phone numbers are used to compile the School Directory, which is a printed booklet listing the contact details of Marsden families.  It is made available to families and staff of the school.  If you do not wish to have your details published in this directory, please contact Tamara Moore via email
tamara.moore@marsden.school.nz before 28 February.

NCEA Policies and Procedures - Sign Off
Parents of students in Years 11 - 13 are asked to read through the NCEA policies and procedures in the student planner (pages 27 - 31), and with their daughter, sign (on page 31) that you have read and understood them.  Familiarization with these are particularly important around what to do in the situation where a student is unable to meet an assessment deadline because of external factors.  We are required by NZQA to be consistent and transparent in the way that we handle such matters and it is important that you are aware of the role you have to play.

n Parents' Association AGM and First 2018 Meeting

Football trials are now Monday 26 February 4pm – 6pm, with a sausage sizzle run by the Friends of Football.

CareMonkey is a parent driven system to collect medical and emergency information, trip permission slips and forms for dissemination. The system provides parents with a secure way to share necessary medical information required by the school in the care of their child. If you are a new parent to Marsden you will receive an email from CareMonkey to register your details. We ask everyone to update CareMonkey if any details change.

Debating Meet and Greet
If your daughter is a debater or coach of a team in Years 9-13, we invite you to come along to a Debating Meet and Greet on Wednesday 28 February at 6pm in the foyer of Te Manawa o te Kura.  It is a chance to meet the coaches, other parents of girls in your daughter's team and hear how the year will run, as well as enjoy light refreshments.  We expect the evening to last 30-45 minutes.  Please RSVP here for catering purposes.

Senior Dance Team Registration
If your daughter would like to be in a senior hip hop dance team, please complete this form to register her.  Practices will be held on Tuesdays at lunchtime and coached by a Year 13 student, with mentoring from an external dance teacher.  There is a possibility of entering a regional competition in August. This would be discussed with the team later in the year.

Scholars’ Assembly - Later this term we are celebrating our academic results from 2017 with our Scholars' Assembly.  I have emailed students and asked to them to get in touch with me, if they believe they are eligible for a colours award.
Scholars’ Badge - If students gained their NCEA Level 1 or 2 endorsed with Excellence, they are eligible for a Scholars badge.  Through the NZQA website, I can print out a list of all students who were endorsed with Excellence.  These students do NOT need to advise me if they are eligible for a scholars’ badge.

Scholars Colours - For students who achieved at the top of the excellence bracket, we award colours instead of a badge.  Here are the criteria for colours:

Level 1: Awarded to all students who have gained 100 or more Excellence credits at Level 1 or above.
NB Discretionary colours may be awarded to students who have strong NCEA results and who have also gained excellent results in qualifications, which may be beyond their year level, such as Cambridge or Scholarship.

Level 2: Awarded to all students who have gained 80 or more Excellence credits at level at Level 2 or above
at least 75 Excellence credits plus one A pass in Cambridge
NB Discretionary colours may be awarded to students who have strong NCEA results and who have also gained excellent results in qualifications, which may be beyond their year level, such as Cambridge A level or Scholarship.

To receive a colours award, students need to email me details of their results - I will then check this against the NZQA / CIE website.  If they are unsure, it’s a good idea to check with me.  If their results change and take them up into the colours category, they need to let me know.
I have asked students to advise me promptly so that I can start putting together the list of award recipients.  New students, who gained their 2017 qualification at a school other than Marsden, are eligible for an award.

Margaret Adeane, Academic Director

Career Information Evening 2018
Every year we hold a career information evening at the Karori campus for Year 10 to 13 students from Whitby and Karori.  This year I surveyed the senior students to ask if there were any particular career areas that interested them.  Their answers included science research, biomedical science, music, art, photography, classics, project management, international business, genetics, astronomy and psychology.  If you think you may be able to share your knowledge of careers in any of these areas, or if you know of anyone whom you think may be able to help, please contact susan.binns@marsden.school.nzI would also love to hear from anyone who would like to take part, or has suggestions about speakers in other fields.  The evening will be on 17 May from 7.00pm-8.30pm.https://ssl.gstatic.com/ui/v1/icons/mail/images/cleardot.gif
