2017 Preschool Term 1 News

Week 11

In the last week of term Preschool was lucky to have two families come in and share traditional festivities. Amelia's mother Jane helped our students make Hot Cross Buns and Nuvein's family brought in morning tea and dressed in national costume to celebrate the Sri Lanken New Year. Meanwhile student Heads of Primary, Olivia Hausmann and Maddie Ferrier, made a special visit to deliver Easter treats. Our students really got into the "under the sea" theme for a joint dressup day with Primary students and that's it for a busy Term 1. We hope everyone has restful holiday and look forward to seeing you all back in Term 2. See more photos in the Week 11 media gallery. (12/04/2017)

Week 10
Marsden Preschool enjoy bike day
Bike day at Preschool is always a fun affair. We get students to decorate their helmets, then ride an obstacle course with stop/go signs and of course they must observe the speed limit! There's nothing like a bundle of new wood off-cuts to spark building inspiration so the carpentry table has been heavily utilised this week. We visited the special Lego wall outside the new Marsden Makes space in the upper school, with a short stop to see Sammie the school mascot, or was it our receptionist Mrs McManus? With Easter approaching there's been some preparations involving melted chocolate, but that's all we can say at the moment. Another good week at Preschool. See more photos in the Y10 media gallery. Week 9
Marsden preschool students point out their origins on a world map
What an interesting exercise getting our students to point out their origins on a world map and how fortunate we are to have a wonderful mix of cultures at Marsden Preschool. Kia ora to our families from China, Dubai, Germany, Greece, India, Ireland, Malaysia and Sri Lanka. Over the week, Little Dribblers came to teach more ball skills, we visited Year 6's pop-up science museum and enjoyed some exercise wiggling and giggling to Jiggle Jam. We were also happy to see how much 'space' information our students have taken on board as they were able to correctly place the planets in the right order around the sun. Well done everyone. See more photos in the Year 9 media gallery. (30/03/2017)

Week 8

Marsden Preschool enjoyed watching The Whale Rider play at Te Papa
Preschool took a trip by bus to see 'The Whale Rider' play at Te Papa Marae. Based on the book by Witi Ihamera and put on by Capital E National Arts Festival, it tells the simple story of young Maori girl, Kahu, and her struggle against tradition to become the leader of her tribe. However things change when Kahu rescues the ancient whale beached in the Whangara Harbour. Our students really loved the show which was aimed at 3-8 year olds. When asked what they enjoyed most, the bus ride was first, followed by the whales and then the pūkana face (when the actor stuck out his tongue!).Marsden Preschool students take bus trip to Te Papa to see Whale Rider play
The rest of the week has revolved around our space exploration. Students made spaceships out of cardboard and foil with cellophane flames and then put them into orbit. They correctly sorted whether planets were made of rock or gas and with our music teacher, Jenny Gould, they identified which instruments sounded like stars. Sarah recorded their fabulous space brainstorm and they made authentic inter-galactic passports for space travel, including age, eye-colour and height using our new height chart. You could say the week has been out of this world! See more photos in the Week 8 media gallery. (23/03/2017)

Week 7
Marsden Preschool circular relay
Normally running around in circles doesn't achieve much but this week we had the Preschool circular relay - so our students literally were running around in circles to pass the baton - great fun! Otherwise, it was business as usual, we enjoyed parachute play, space counting, painting, making coloured pikelets (yum), fun with masks and some lovely cooperative block building - another great week at Preschool. See more photos in the media gallery. (17/03/2017)

Week 6
Marsden Preschool visit Space Place at Carter Observatory
Preschool had a very exciting trip to the Space Place at Carter Observatory, as part of their exploration into all things 'Space'. When asked later what they most enjoyed ... No. 1 the bus ride, No. 2 the "movie" aka the Planetarium Show called "The Family of the Sun" about Pluto looking for a home, and No. 3 the big telescope. In music with Jenny Gould they've been singing about aliens and flying saucers, while outside they've been getting closer to the stars with some tree climbing. See more photos in the week 6 media gallery. (09/03/2017)

Week 5

It was wet and wild on Wednesday but only for Preschool's fun waterplay day. The sprinkler was out and the waterslide was slippery enough for everyone to have a very giggly time! We've definitely made the most of the fine weather, getting outside as much as possible. For Shrove Tuesday we make pancakes and Little Dribblers came to put our students through some football drills on Thursday. New to Preschool, Nuvein, received his Welcome Certificate in the Primary Chapel and Arlo's Granddad and Great Granddad from overseas came to visit - so lovely to meet you! See more photos in the week 5 media gallery. (02/03/2017)

Week 4
Marsden Preschoolers enjoy family sausage sizzle
It was so lovely to have parents come to our once a term sausage sizzle in Preschool on Friday, it's a great way for families to meet while the children enjoy their sausages, evident from sauce on faces! We are happy to hear the tea and coffee was a bit of a reviver at the end of a full week and nice to see more dads this time too! This week we've been learning numbers at mat time and taking advantage of the fine weather (at long last) to get outside as much as possible. See more photos in the week 4 media gallery. (23/02/2017)

Week 3
Chantel's grandparents make dumplings at Marsden Preschool
We are very grateful to Chantel's Mother and Grandparents who came to Preschool and helped our students make dumplings for Chinese New Year and to Marsden's Chinese assistant, Emma, who started her programme teaching Preschoolers Chinese language. It stayed fine for the Teddy Bear's Picnic which our students shared with Primary and they also spent time getting to know their Year 5 buddies. This term's inquiry is all about Space and students were very excited to see the inflatable planets go up inside. Along the same theme they enjoyed being 'aliens in spaceships' using hula hoops in Jenny Gould's fun music session. A full and busy week 2 in Preschool.  See more photos in the week 3 media gallery. (16/02/2017)

Week 1 & 2
Marsden Preschool discover crazy glasses
What a great start to the year we've had in Preschool. On Day 1 the children discovered our collection of crazy glasses and had some fun with them. Year 12 students visited and spent some time playing, which our young students absolutely loved. While the weather has been patchy we've spent as much time as possible outside, the children even told Mrs Cave to put on a raincoat as they wanted to keep playing in the light rain!
