Term 2 News 2017

Week 10
Marsden Preschool and Y1-3 Primary students enjoy performance by Little Dog Barking Company
On Thursday Marsden Preschool and Years 1-3 Primary students watched the Little Dog Barking Company perform Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge, based on a children's book by Australian writer Mem Fox. About a group of elders remembering the past and discussing “What is a memory?” they discover that a memory is something warm, from long ago, that makes you laugh, is precious as gold and makes you sad. Our students were all totally engrossed, loved the interaction with the large puppets and seemed to understand the story and ideas very well. What a nice way to round off Term 2. Week 9

There were stars everywhere this week at Preschool as we celebrated Matariki, Maori New Year, with the rise of the Pleiades star cluster. Traditionally, Matariki was used to determine the coming season's crop. A warmer season, and therefore a more productive crop yield, was indicated by how bright the stars were. Our students were definitely bright stars on dress-up day. See more images in the Week 9 media gallery. (29/06/2017)

Week 8

Hands and Hearts have been a recurring theme this week in Preschool as our students continue their exploration into the human body, painting and creating collage hearts and making yummy shortbread hands. The image above is a painting of Head of Preschool, Mrs Cave, with a very large heart - which she thinks is very special, although she's not sure where the 'red' hair fits in! The letter of the week was 'E' and there was a nice selection of 'E' related things for mat time. Outside we practiced running circular relays and overarm throwing. Working together in the sandpit the children made a huge sand mountain, nearly as tall as a student, and they also dug and buried pipes the entire length of the pit. Week 7
Marsden Preschool trip to Capital Gymsports
What a fabulous trip Preschool had to Capital Gymsports this week. The bus trip there and back is always exciting but then when we got there the energy levels soared. Gymsport staff got everyone warmed up first with the big parachute and stretching and then our students were able to try the wonderful course of challenging bars, beams, ladders and mats, finishing with a hula hoop cool down. Definitely the highlight of this week. See more photos in the Week 7 media gallery. (19/06/2017)

Week 6
Marsden Preschool play in trees
This week the weather has been a little more challenging, however we did get to play with the autumn leaves and climb trees, but mainly we've enjoyed a lot of indoor play. We've made choc chip cookies, enjoyed another Chinese lesson, played with dough and a fun Incy Wincy Spider counting game, although our exploration into insects is winding down. We've taken a democratic vote and students have opted for "Body Parts" as the next topic. There's been great interest in the Wow Wall, where students get stickers for doing something wonderful based on the week's virtue - this week it's "Creativity".  All in all another good week. See more photos in the Week 6 media gallery. (07/06/2017)

Week 5
Marsden Preschool enjoy a sausage sizzle
Preschool have made the most of the settled weather this week, getting outside as much as possible. We enjoyed a sausage sizzle with parents and participated in the annual Primary cross country challenge on the big field. Certificates for winners will be presented in assembly. With our insect theme in mind we made delicate butterfly cakes which were yummy and we have contributed to weekly paper recycling. See more images in week 5 media gallery. (31/05/2017)

Week 4
Music specialist with Marsden Preschoolers
Marsden Primary's amazing specialist music teacher, Jenny Gould, has helped Preschool students make wonderful insect noises during their music session this week. They made spider noises on the drums, grasshopper sounds with the claves sticks and fluttering butterflies with the tambourines. Although we do lots of fun music, singing and movement during our days, Jenny's dramatic musical magic really inspires and extends our students. We have been caregivers to a lone Monarch caterpillar as it is too cold outside for it to survive. Our students are so taken with it they have named her "Stripey Barbara" and have spent time observing and drawing her. They have also made insect shapes out of paper then used them to screenprint with. See more photos from our fun creative week in the week 4 media gallery. (25/05/2017)

Week 3

Preschool mothers joined us on Friday for assembly and morning tea as a special acknowledgement ahead of Mothers' Day and to say thank you for the wonderful job they do as mums. Our students loved showing them around and performed some NZ Sign Language songs and Kapa Haka and a special insect song for them. See more photos in the week 3 media gallery. (18/05/2017)

Week 2

Preschool's exploration of bugs and insects is well underway. At mat time every student took the opportunity to study a cicada skin up close, they were fascinated to observe it's, legs, thorax, abdomen and hard skin. As well as all the normal activities available for our students, we got the special magnetic sand out this week and the musical instruments so students could learn about keeping a beat and how to play loud and soft. A fun second week to Term 2. See more in the week 2 media gallery. (11/05/2017)

Week 1

What a nice start Preschool has had to the beginning of Term 2. It's clear our students enjoyed their holidays, some went to the movies and it was lovely to see them re-enacting a scene out of Moana, paddling a waka in the playground. They've created some beautiful paper mosaics, enjoyed juicing apples with Mrs Cave and started their new exploration into insects with some big bug puzzles. See more in the week 1 media gallery.
