2017 Term 3 News

Week 8

Marsden Preschool students finished Māori Language Week by rehearsing a pōwhiri (welcome) including the traditional hongi (greeting) and then joined together for a hākari (feast). We are delighted to see that their kapa haka lessons with Sarah Molisa have given them a real sense of decorum and they treated the occasion with great dignity. Another of our special celebrations in Preschool is the bitter/sweet leaving ceremony. Sad because we say goodbye to one of our students, but happy knowing they are well prepared to move on to Year 1. Traditionally our leaver wears a korowai (cloak) and carries a taiaha (a traditional Māori weapon) which they use to ask questions of the other students, like "what will you miss when I've gone?"  Our leaver also does the walk of stars and we talk about their accomplishments and dreams for the future. It's a really lovely tradition. See more photos in the Week 8 media gallery.  (21/09/2017)

Week 6 and 7

Marsden Preschool welcomes Sola Freeman who is here conducting research for her PhD.  We are delighted to be one of four schools in Wellington contributing to Sola's investigation into 'How Children Learn Science'. This week we have continued our enquiry into boats and ships, trialling different materials to see if they sink or float and whether they can take passengers. Last Friday we had a fun Onesie day with the Primary School and helped raise over $750 for the Wellington Free Ambulance. We are getting our vegetable bed ready for Spring planting and enjoyed fossicking for things of interest in the garden where we found a stick insect, daisies and some very interesting tree sap. Week 5
Marsden Preschool students enquiry 'will it sink or will it float'
How lovely to welcome so many parents to our Term 3 Sausage Sizzle - held inside again due to inclement weather, but Spring is coming! With this term's enquiry into boats and ships in mind, Preschool students loved having the water bath inside to check some theories on whether "it will sink or float".  The Lego boat sank at first until sides were added and then it floated! Very cool enquiry with students very engaged! The letter of the week is 'L' and it was fabulous to utilise 3 lemons from the 'Letter of the Week Table' to make some beautiful lemon cakes, and not surprisingly the icing was a big hit. We've also enjoyed visiting the Primary Book Fair to see all the beautiful reading matter on offer. All in all another great week at Preschool. See more photos in the Week 5 media gallery. Week 4
Marsden Preschool students create Shadow Theatre
Drama around storytelling has been a focus in Preschool this week with students making their own stick puppets to create shadow theatre of Jack and the Bean Stalk.  We think they did an amazing job! They also prepared and decorated gorgeous gingerbread men, which obviously went down a treat! See more photos in the Week 4 media gallery. (25/08/2017)

Week 3

Preschool students took advantage of fine spells in the weather to get outside and play in the sandpit, ride bikes on the courts and practise shooting hoops. However it rained the day Little Dribblers came, so they held their training session in the gymnasium. We really notice how much our students' ball skills are improving from these visits and they have such fun too. See more photos in the Week 3 media gallery. (18/08/2017)

Week 2

A definite highlight for Preschool this week was the very exciting visit by the Karori fire fighters and their big red engine. They spoke to us about fire safety and then opened up the truck for our students to explore and even try using the CB radio. Very cool! See more photos in the Week 2 media gallery. (11/08/2017)

Preschool Holiday Programme

Marsden Preschool students make pizza
What a busy and full line up our staff arranged for students signed up for the Preschool holiday programme. On Monday they made ice-cream and and created patterns with shaving foam. On Tuesday they engineered electrical circuits and checked out the challenging Primary playground. Wednesday they brought in their teddy bears for a special picnic and Thursday was Popcorn and Postman Pat movie day. They topped it all off on Friday with pizza making. Phew, that was the holidays!
