Scholars' Awards Criteria

Our Scholars’ Assembly at the end of Term One celebrates the excellent achievements of Marsden students in their NCEA and Scholarship qualifications of the previous year. 

Our top performing students receive Scholars’ Awards which are divided into two categories: scholars’ badges (to acknowledge excellence) and scholars’ colours (to acknowledge outstanding achievement).A recipient may receive only one of these awards.   

In 2021, the criteria for Scholars’ Awards is adjusted for qualifications gained in 2020. These adjustments are in line with those made by NZQA to acknowledge the disruption caused by Covid-19. The criteria below reflect those adjustments.

The Marsden Scholars’ Badge

Criteria for a Marsden Scholar’s badge at Level 1
Awarded to all students who have gained NCEA Level 1 endorsed with excellence (ie 46 or more excellence credits) after completing their first full year of study at that level. The scholars’ badge (and excellence endorsement) would normally require 50 credits at excellence level.

Criteria for a Marsden Scholar’s badge at Level 2
Awarded to all students who have gained NCEA Level 2 endorsed with excellence (ie 46 or more excellence credits) after completing their first full year of study at that level. The scholars’ badge (and excellence endorsement) would normally require 50 credits at excellence level.

Criteria for a Marsden Scholar’s badge at Level 3
Awarded to all students who have gained NCEA Level 3 endorsed with excellence (ie 46 or more excellence credits). The scholars’ badge (and excellence endorsement) would normally require 50 credits at excellence level.

Marsden Scholars' Colours

Criteria for a Marsden Scholars’ colours award at Level 1
Awarded to all students, mainly studying at Level 1, who have gained 95 or more excellence credits at Level 1 or above.

Results gained in previous years can be added to the most recent year of study for this first level of colours awards.

NB Discretionary colours may be awarded to students who have strong NCEA results and who have also gained excellent results in qualifications, which may be beyond their year level, such as Level 2 NCEA.

Criteria for a Marsden Scholars’ colours award at Level 2
Awarded to all students who have gained 75 or more excellence credits at Level 2 or above.

Results should have been gained in the most recent year of study.

NB Discretionary colours may be awarded to students who have strong NCEA results and who have also gained excellent results in qualifications beyond their year level such as Level 3 NCEA or Scholarship.

Criteria for a Marsden Scholars’ colours award at Level 3
Awarded to all students who have gained 70 or more Excellence credits at Level 3
OR
3 or more Scholarships
OR
2 Outstanding Scholarships
OR
At least 65 Excellence credits at Level 3 AND one Scholarship
OR
At least 55 Excellence credits at Level 3 AND two Scholarships
OR
At least 50 Excellence credits AND one Outstanding Scholarship PLUS one Scholarship

Results should have been gained in the most recent year of study.

NB Discretionary colours may be awarded to students whose outstanding results are not covered by these criteria.

Please note that a colours award usually requires five more credits at excellence level for each of the above criteria.
